Evernote. Where do we start?
There is so much I could say about this fantastically free utility that I could dedicate an entire blog to gushing its praises. Instead, I will begin by illustrating how I use the service, hoping this information will help you decide how the application may fit into your life.
The cool thing about Evernote is it works for both windows and mac and has a myriad of ways information can be stored, codified and retrieved.
As a fanboy of graphic design and photography, Evernote has really helped me save precious inbox space in Gmail. Before Evernote, I would send multple links from either my news feeds in reader, or a website I explored to my inbox for archiving. Not anymore.
Evernote’s entire business is built around the very simple mantra of “Remember Everything.” With this mission behind their service, they’ve created a three-part system for users to seamlessly capture, sync and find almost any type of media on the web.
Each free account comes with a monthly upload allowance of 40 mb, which I have yet to use up. I’ve even caught myself consciously trying to use up space, but was only able to barely pass 20 mb before my allowance was renewed. For heavy web clippers a $5 monthly fee gives you a monthly upload allowance of 500mb’s, ad-free public notebooks, enhanced security and more.

How I use Evernote:
1. Recipes – As a pescatarian, I’m always on the look out for new dishes to try. The net is not scarce with its share of glorious recipe-themed blogs, cooking sites and recipe groups.
One of the most useful ways I’ve incorporated Evernote into my life is by keeping a digital recipe booklet, which is easily accessed everywhere I go. Additionally, all recipes can be fully retrieved by type of meal, ingredient or the like. Once clipped to my Evernote, I use my iPhone as my digital cookbook and follow the clipped recipe through an iPhone native version of the site.
Katawi and I are eager to try this Butternut squash recipe I found while perusing The Kitchn.

2. Gift ideas – I love surprising people with gifts. One way to easily keep track of the countless cool things I find while online is by clipping them to their own special notebook in Evernote. I’m also able to search these entries easily. They’re fully indexed and scannable.

3. Stuff – Like my notebook established for the sole purpose of codifiying gift ideas, I have another notebook dedicated to stuff that interests me. Things like watches, toys, concepts, video game codes and visual iconography for my band EL*7. All these concepts go into a notebook aptly titled carlmckinney.

Those are just a few ways I like to use the service, but I’m discovering more ways each day. If you think of additional ways you can use the service, or your inbox is in dire need of some relief, give Evernote a whirl. It’s totally free and comes with a boat-load of options.
